8 am, 10:15 and 11:25
Good morning:
Today we are having in-depth literary discussion on Rodriquez, Rose, and Dumas. In class, you are all breaking up in groups of three and are working on different sections of these stories. Additionally, you are structuring your presentations in a They Say, We Say format.
They Say = what you all believe the author is saying
We Say = what your group thinks might be the bigger, deeper, other meanings of the text
After you meet in your groups and do the above work, you will present it to the class and initiate a discussion.
EXTRA Credit
Post your group's notes in the comment section below.
Take care,
Prof. Keane

She Say:
Her parents aren't making an effort to learn the American language. She feels that all of the experiences that her father had told her were a lie. Her mother takes the easy way out by using her as a translator and not just learning the language. Also her brother is just to busy to help her out. Thirty years later her parents have given up on adapting to the American culture, but the American culture has somewhat adapted to non American cultures ways with having newspapers, televisions, and supermarkets. She gave up on encouraging her parents to learn the American culture.
We are Say:
She feels like she has to grow up faster and be the adult instead of her parents being the adults. She is also frustrated that her parents aren't even trying to make the effort to adapt to the American culture. With her brother so busy and not helping out she feels like she is taking full responsibility for the family when it should be her parents taking responsibility.

ReplyDeleteIn the narrative "The achievement of desire" the narrator starts to realize that the book he read by Richard Hoggart truly defines how he really is. Once the time for his dissertation arrives, he notices that his studies have taken him so far that he has forgotten who he really was and starts to doubt himself. He feels the world he's living in is a very lonely one and makes him feel like he really does not belong there. He then starts to hate his scholar environment and feels what he really needs is his not so lonesome past.
We say
Rodriguez found someone for the first time he could connect with, even if it was a author (Richard Hoggar) from a book. As he started to write he dissertation he notices how strange and alienated he felt being in London at the British Museum. The more he thought about his dissertation the more lost and distanced he felt from his heritage. he started to doubt his life as a Scholar man and began to panic; realizing that at his level he new a lot about books however when he had to write he couldn't express himself.

hey professor Keane, its Gary and Joelmy. We had Leffingwell Elementry and we think that Firoozeh thinks her mother didn't help her image out that much by not finding Iran on the map when the teacher picked her. There is going to most definetly be a power swtich in the house because her parents really didn't get educated in this launguge. But now Firoozeh is so she will be doing most of the talking at stores or on the phone. She thought the world of her parents back in Iran, she thought they were well educated but now she doesn't know what to think about them.

ReplyDeleteWe say:
Me nd Joelmy think that there is going to most definetly be a power switch in the house. While she is at school learning the language, she goes up because she is going to be doing most of the english talking. She is confused on what to think because her mother didn't find Iran on the map, now she doesn't know what to think.
They Say:
Firoozeh is trying to say that America is a big move for her and her family. But it will give her and her family a much better oppurtunity to succeed.

ReplyDelete"The Achievement of Desire" paragraphs 1-17:
They say: School started to change Richard and it separated him from his family and the life that he once used to enjoy. As he advanced he noticed that his parents weren't progressing as much as he was, which is the reason why he chose not to rely/admire his parents any longer because he wouldn't have been able to pursue his desire of success.
We say: That he really felt embarrassed and saw a little chance for success. He chose to be on his own because the only person he could rely on was himself.

Hello Prof. Keane,
ReplyDeleteIts Brittany Castellanos and Alexandra Quispe. We did the Rodriguez story 1-17. We were in group 1.
Our response:
Rodriguez talks about how he came into an immigrant family and he dedicated his life to books and to studies. His parents never understood him like the nuns did Rodriguez mentions. I feel his brothers and sisters would make him jelouse with all there trophies but really Rodriguez was also very bright. I think Rodriguez is talking about how his parents lifestyle isnt changing but his is. Hes losing his culture little by little and I think hes proud of that.

ReplyDeleteRodriguez,2 18-25
These paragraph are about te struggles that Rodriguez faces at home. He's pulling away from his family due to his English learning. He is not speaking the language, that is spoken at home, becasue he wants to lose his accent. His parents think this is different and not like him because there used to being a 'family".
At school,he would be more active and more himself becuase he felt comfortable speaking English and at home he was more quiet and more to himself completely because of the language.
kamal and I are doing a story written by mike rose, I think that rose is talking about students can not understand their school education. You will have students dropping or signing up a class, because they are afraid of teacher and a lot of work that they would have to face.

When Firoozeh’s older brother left their country to start a life America, she was sad but her feeling quickly changed after her brother sent her some Barbie dolls. He father always spoke highly of America, it is a land where rules aren’t broken people are friendly, it’s a clean land very much like a paradise in his eyes. That was the last thing in Dumas’s eye to her America was a land where there are more outfits for her Barbie
Before her first day of school in America, her parent met with the teacher. Her father tried to make her seen very educated by pointing it out that she had attended a very prestigious kindergarten, mean while all the words she knew was a few colors. Firoozeh never felt so embarrassed of her mother when she attended her first day of school with her. After her mother was put on the spot to point out her own country Iran, and she could not point it out she felt bad. Back in Iran women such as her mother are restricted of their education. They only take basic education and then they have to drop everything, because they have to get ready to get married and learn how to serve their husband.
After getting lost after school with her mother, a very kind American women and child, help then by walking them home. Firoozeh learned that her father was right, Americans where nice and It was a clean place.
Group Summary:
Are group believes Firoozeh tries to tell us about the cultural difference of women. Women in her country do not have the right to receive a proper education and earn a higher degree. People in America made her and her mother feel stupid, because she did not know how to speak their language and some of their basic education. She now realizes her father was right about America, it really was clean and the people were kind. But she did not have anything good to say about the education taught in America. We believe she’s trying to say that though in her country women a not properly taught in America that does not matter. The children in America are not always taught right some fall behind, because they have problems with learning.
